M&E (Music and Effects) Track is Good to Go

I know there haven't been many posts this past month and that's because we've been incredibly busy finishing MindFlesh and preparing for our move to the good ol' US of A.

Hopefully by the end of today we'll have finished the M&E soundtrack and that means all work on the actually film is finally over! Well, except to rip from the 1Terabyte hardrive to print to HDCAM tape.

The M&E (Music and Effects) soundtrack is what's required for foreign-language sales or at least in those countries that dub the dialogue into the local language (e.g. Germany, Spain). Countries like Sweden subtitle, which is much easier for us :)

The M&E for MindFlesh has been quite quick to complete actually - thanks mainly to the fact that there's so little dialogue! We also have quite a pragmatic approach which requires us to do our own foley in Matt the editor's backyard and kitchen :) It was a lot of fun. And we got a big kick out of seeing the film with the dialogue missing and listening to our "fake" footsteps and chair slides.

Now I have to turn my attention to the paperwork..zzzz... I have to timecode all the dialogue and re-write the script so that it matches what actually happens in the film we've edited. After that we should be good to go :)

Yellow Pages is bad for the Environment

This week the Yellow Pages arrived on everyone's doorstep. It's too big to fit through the letterbox of course so it's just thrown outside the front door.... and that's where it appears to have stayed for most households in my area. This morning about 70% of houses still have a now rain-soaked (though plastic covered) yellow directory on their step or driveway - and it arrived about Tuesday last week.

I stepped over my copy for a few days (like my neighbours I couldn't be bothered to bend to pick it up!) and then threw it directly into the recycling van when it came on Friday. What a complete waste of paper. And think of the energy used to transport all those heavy yellow books.

Does anyone actually use paper directories any more?

Brown is Bad for Britain

Has the whole country gone to sleep? That's got to be the only answer if we're to believe this week's polls. Gorden Brown is a sanctimonious totalitarian hell bent on telling everyone in the country how to live their lives. He wants everyone dependent on the State and thanking him personally for his generous salaries and hand-outs paid for by a shrinking over-burdened working population. If you're not gracious then you'll be off to prison... except that they're overflowing so you'll be out sooner than expected. It's so typical of this Government: there's no joined-up thinking; just headline grabbing.

And what happens this week? We learn that Brown's conference speech is a rehash of speeches from Al Gore and others. It's all so manufactured and dressed up. Brown is mutton dressed as lamb.

Wake up! Everything this Government touches turns to shit. Never mind the billions of pounds have been wasted on unwieldy, poorly specified computer projects, what about billions of pounds spent on schools for no improvement in education standards. The A-Level is now a completely worthless joke fast being replaced by other international qualifications and University entrance exams. How did this happen? An obsession with massaging the numbers and chasing statistics. If we can't improve education, we'll dumb down the exam; we'll lower the bar so that more can jump over it.

Billions of pounds have been spent on the NHS yet there's more people than ever dying of infections due to poor cleaning standards. And don't blame privatisation; here's a fact: at the end of the period for gathering stats, one health authority I know of outsourced it's waiting list for a particular routine operation and in 2 weeks the mobile, private operating theater did as many operations as the hospital had done in a year. It's not about money, it's about efficiency.

Please everyone stop being fooled by Brown and his crony Government. Brown's idea of "listening" is to surround himself by lesser mortals than he so that he can "listen" and ignore without any fighting. Blair was a deceitful fake but Brown is far, far worse and a bully to boot.

<deep breath......>

Ok, I'm chilled now :) Just want to sign-off with the news that we're following through on our threat to leave the country if Brown should ever be crowned Prime Minister: we're off to San Francisco and hope to be on the ground before Xmas. Good luck to anyone who has the stomach to eat more of Brown's shit. Hopefully when we come back home a new Government will be in office... better still a slimmed down, less costly Government and fewer quangos... yeah I know, that's just a dream ;)

Practical Digital Video magazine

I'm delighted to say that we have been given a four-page spread in Practical Digital Video magazine. It's a beautiful looking layout with lovely photos (thanks to unit photographer Jeremy Larkin) - and it's a pretty cool magazine so definitely worth buying if you can find it on a shelf near you.

Here's the first page as a .jpg but you can download the article as a Adobe .pdf by clicking here.

ZenTV and Robot Football

I'm sorry I haven't posted much to the blog over the past month. I've been nose-to-the-grindstone hard at it trying to get MindFlesh finished. I'm pleased to say that the moment is due to come this week! Oh yeah!

Quick MindFlesh Update

Cinematographer Patrick Jackson was over here last week to finish the picture grading and now I just have the final soundtrack mix to go though (tomorrow) and we're done... kinda :) What we'll then have is some cool digital files that needs to be transferred to HDCAM and digiBeta for public screenings and to DVD for industry screeners.

Thanks to everyone who emailed their kind comments on the trailer!

Zen Online

As moving-picture entertainment technology strides forward we've been looking into online distribution (download and rental). There are quite a few sites now ranging from Amazon's Unboxed (USA only) & iTunes (only available to the big studios... and only in the US at the moment) to Jaman/CineQuest and my current favorite Brightcove. I like the fact that we can mount the player on our website and also have the content syndicated.

I ought also to mention that we recently signed a deal with start-up DreamTV in the USA for both the English and Spanish language rights to London Voodoo. DreamTV will deliver its channel to living rooms via Verismo, an IP TV provider (IP= Internet protocol TV= television :) Duh!).

Ok, finally, back to Brightcove. Here's a cool clip of Robots playing football for no other reason than I like robots :)
